Let’s talk about Calvado’s packaging and trends!
Like Champagne, Cognac, Armagnac, etc., Calvados is a drink of controlled origin – AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée). That means that only the drink made following French legislation and produced in the Normandy region in France can only be called Calvados.
The Calvados drink is made from apples, from which the cider is extracted and then fermented and distilled.
In 2019 the drink was successful, being present at the launch of many manufacturers. In 2020 this trend is expected to continue. Check below some of the 2019’s successes and Calvados Packaging recommendations!
Avallen Calvados

Released by Tim Etherington-Judge and STEPHANIE JORDAN, Avallen Calvados has been aged in French oak barrels for two years.
In the production of Avallen Calvados, the company adopted a series of sustainable practices, basing its business model on the transparency of its methods, which include local sourcing, no sugar addition, and nature conservation.
Local sourcing
The bottle, label, box, and cork come from France. Only 2% of apples used to make Avallen Calvados are grown on-site at Distillerie Coquerel, which produces Calvados. The remainder comes from farms all within 20km of the distillery.
No sugar addition
Avallen Calvados is made without the addition of sugar, caramel, or boisé. The company provides a lab analysis that shows the full composition of their liquid. This analysis is available to anyone interested in the distillery’s website.
Nature conservation
Avallen supports the local bee conservation financially by donating for french organizations €0.50 for each bottle sold. They also assumed the commitment to plant 10,000 wild plants over three years to support wild bee populations.
Mackmyra Äppelblom

Mackmyra Äppelblom is a single malt distilled at Mackmyra Bruk that uses Calvados casks for finishes. Äppelblom – means ‘apple blossom’ in Swedish.

Affinity

In 2019, the Scotch Whisky maker Compass Box launched Affinity, “a blend of scotch whisky and Calvados”.
Compass Box explains where they got their inspiration from to create Affinity.
Scotland and Normandy are both northern European; they share a cool, maritime climate. While one grows cereals principally, and the other is known for its apples, these agricultural products have a long history of usage together, especially in baking. We saw an opportunity for a new collaboration.

From homemade experiments
Compass Box whiskey makers have started mixing Calvados with Scotch whiskey in their distillery and mixing room for years. When they managed to obtain the Calvados in what they considered high quality and in sufficient quantities, they decided to share their private experiments with the world.
Classic flavour combination
Apples and spice are riffing off dried fruits and vanilla. JOHN GLASER — Compass Box Founder & Whiskymaker explains that Affinity showcases the mouthcoating texture and ripe fragrance of Calvados, partnering it with the rich spiciness and malty aromas of Scotch whisky.
Limited
According to The Spirits Business, only 6,028 bottles of Affinity have been released globally, priced at RRP £100 (US$150).
